The Fifth Submarine for the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet Set Afloat

Pr. 636 Mozhaisk submarine, the fifth submarine of the Pacific Fleet series, designed by Rubin Design Bureau and constructed at Admiralty Shipyard, was pulled out of the workshop and set afloat today.

In course of the ceremony, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, pointed out "a huge modernization potential" of Pr.636 submarines. He reminded that the first two submarines of the Pacific Fleet series, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and Volkhov, accomplished a transoceanic transit to their home base, the city of Vladivostok, through three oceans - the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific - and in a month after that took part in live missile-firing exercises. Another submarine of this series, Magadan, arrived to Vladivostok via the Northern Sea Route and this year was engaged in snap drills of the Pacific Fleet.

Mozhaisk is the thirty-first submarine constructed under Pr. 636. All submarines of this project were delivered as per contract schedule. The construction cycle of Pr.636 submarines has been technically and organizationally perfected and ends within three years only.

"I would like to express confidence that the high quality submarines will be delivered to the Navy in due time", said the Commander-in-Chief. He wished the Mozhaisk crew a successful completion of their course tasks.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Mr. Viktor Evtukhov stated: "This is one of the most successful developments of the national Rubin Design Bureau, acknowledged worldwide. Mozhaisk and other submarines of this project are practically invisible - they are low-noise and stealthy. A wide range of innovative solutions is implemented: the submarine is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors as well as advanced life support systems. The submarine is designed to perform two major tasks - provision of national defence capability and saving lives of the crew. I am sure that Mozhaisk submarine will successfully meet the challenges. This year the submarine will be delivered and will join the service at the Pacific Fleet. The construction of Mozhaisk once again clearly demonstrates that our shipbuilders meet all requirements of the State Defence Order".

In his turn, Chairman of Board of Directors of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Mr. Georgiy Poltavchenko named the Mozhaisk submarine "the best illustration of technical and scientific sovereignty of Russia".
