Today the International Maritime Defence Show "FLEET 2026" hosted the official ceremony of stamp cancellation commemorating the 100th anniversary of Academician Igor D. Spassky, Honorary Citizen of Saint Petersburg.

2 Aug 2026 will mark hundred years since the birth of the scientist, engineer and the head of Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering Rubin (Rubin of USC). Stamps dedicated to Igor Spassky were introduced into postal operation on 10 June 2026.

The stamp depicts Igor Spassky against the background of Project 941 (Akula) heavy strategic missile submarine cruiser and the drawing of Project 658 nuclear missile submarine. Back in the late 1950s, the future head of USC's Rubin determined the architecture of the first Soviet missile submarine of Project 658. As for Project 941, it has become the pinnacle of Igor Spassky's work as a head of Design Bureau and an engineer. For development of Akula Project, he was awarded the USSR State Prize (in 1983).

The postage stamp has been developed and issued by JSC Marka with the participation of United Shipbuilding Corporation and USC's Rubin Design Bureau. Stamp's commercial artist - Maksim Podobed; the stamp was issued in an edition of 56 thousand copies.

The icon of submarine shipbuilding, Igor Spassky (1926 - 2024) had been working in the largest design company for marine engineering in Russia for 70 years, 33 years being the head of it.

For development, production and modernization of three generations of nuclear submarine missile-carriers, Igor Spassky was awarded the Russian Federation State Prize (in 2007). The academician pioneered modular method of submarine construction and introduced recreation areas for the crew onboard submarines. He also substantiated fitting the Kalibr missile system onboard conventional submarines, therefore considerably increasing combat capabilities of the conventional submarine fleet. He actively encouraged export contracts, initiated and managed the Bureau's activities on development of civil marine engineering.

Igor Spassky was a People's Deputy and a Member of Executive Committee of the Leningrad Soviet, and a People's Deputy of Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1989-1991). Under the leadership of Igor Spassky, the Design Bureau took part in preservation of Saint Petersburg cultural heritage objects, namely, St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, Alexander Pushkin memorial flat, and Literary Cafe. Igor Spassky managed development of Narodovolets Submarine Museum, and Monument "Glory to the Russian Navy" (1996, dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy). In 2002, the academician was granted the title of Honorary Citizen of Saint Petersburg.
