Today diesel-electric submarine Yakutsk (Project 636), which completes the series of conventional submarines constructed for the Pacific Fleet, has been commissioned into the Russian Navy. Designer, Rubin Design Bureau, and Builder, Admiralty Shipyards, are both part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation.

Project 636 submarines belong to one of the most successful series in the history of global non-nuclear submarine shipbuilding. Project 636 was thoroughly modernized. The acoustic signature of this submarine was quite low, and yet the designer and its subcontractors were able to further reduce it, improve her sonar facilities and a number of other systems. The modernization targeted not only functionality of the major systems but also ease of their control.

Capability for operational use of cruise missiles against sea and land targets makes Project 636 submarines a powerful tool for performing regional missions. The submarine is also capable of fighting air targets.
